J.F. Tyrell is the founder of the Tyrell Corporation, which produces bio-engineered replicants for off-world labor. He oversaw the creation of the Nexus-6 replicants, including Roy Batty, and the Nexus-7 replicant Rachael. Tyrell's philosophy held that replicants' short lifespans gave them little time to develop emotional control, so he experimented with implanting memories to create an emotional cushion. Rachael was given the memories of Tyrell's niece, leading her to believe she was human. Tyrell refused to discuss the issue with Rachael when she began to suspect her true nature. In the film, Roy Batty and the other renegade replicants come to Earth seeking a way to lengthen their lifespans. Using J.F. Sebastian, Roy gains access to Tyrell's inner sanctum. During their meeting, Tyrell calls Roy his "prodigal son" and tells him his life cannot be extended, advising him to revel in the life he has. Roy then kills Tyrell and Sebastian. Tyrell's death occurs in his office, high above Los Angeles, marking the end of his reign as the architect of synthetic life.
