Tyrell Corporation Origins

More human than human.

The Tyrell Corporation was the manufacturer of replicants, bioengineered beings used for labor and military service on off-world colonies. Founded by Eldon Tyrell, the corporation operated from a ziggurat building in Los Angeles. Its Nexus series replicants, such as the Nexus-6 and Nexus-7 models, were central to the Blade Runner franchise. The company's influence extended globally, with its replicants being essential to off-world expansion. However, the corporation's hubris led to its downfall when a group of rogue Nexus-6 replicants, led by Roy Batty, confronted Tyrell in his own sanctum, resulting in his death.

Lore & Background

The Tyrell Corporation was the creator of the Nexus series replicants, including the Nexus-6 models like Roy Batty, Leon, Zhora, and Pris, and the Nexus-7 model Rachael. Eldon Tyrell, the founder, believed that implanting replicants with memories would allow them to develop emotional control, making them more manageable. He designed replicants with a four-year lifespan to prevent them from developing full emotional complexity. The corporation's headquarters was a towering ziggurat in Los Angeles, a symbol of its power. Tyrell was killed by Roy Batty, who sought an extension to his lifespan but was refused. After Tyrell's death, the corporation's status became defunct, though its legacy continued through sequels and spinoffs.

In Their Own Story

In the film Blade Runner, Roy Batty and his group of replicants infiltrated the Tyrell Corporation to confront their creator. Roy used J.F. Sebastian to gain access to Tyrell's inner sanctum. There, Tyrell referred to Roy as his 'prodigal son' and told him his life could not be extended. Roy then killed Tyrell and Sebastian. This event marked the end of the Tyrell Corporation's dominance, as its founder was assassinated by his own creation.

Reader's Guide

The Tyrell Corporation is central to the Blade Runner narrative as the manufacturer of replicants. Its founder, Eldon Tyrell, was a geneticist who created the Nexus series, including the Nexus-6 combat model Roy Batty and the Nexus-7 Rachael, who was given the ability to reproduce. The corporation's headquarters in Los Angeles was a ziggurat building. The Voight-Kampff test was used by Blade Runners to identify replicants, a test that Rachael failed due to her implanted memories.
